In Church Committees and Councils
Many of us joined church committees and councils because we want to serve God and the church and we want to see the church positively witness and serve people in the world. When we join we are often more focused on what we want to do and achieve than on the role and responsibilities we have taken on as a part of a particular committee, council or board. But the reality is that all formal positions whether paid or unpaid have responsibilities defined by Church regulations and by-laws and/or defined by law. It is important that you recognize that committee, council and board positions are leadership roles and have particular responsibilities and accountabilities.
In the Uniting Church we have the Basis of Union, Constitution Regulations, Synod By-Laws and other Policies and Procedures to guide our decision-making structures and processes. However there are other expectations of Government legislation and members of our church and the community that are additional to the guidelines in these documents.
