internships

an activity of the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of New South Wales and the ACT

Jonathan Foye

My internship with the Communications Unit in 2007, undertaken while completing my Communications degree at the University of Western Sydney, was an extremely valuable experience. It provided me with the opportunity to write and edit work to a deadline, take part in the production of a magazine from start to finish and get feedback for my work. All of this has contributed immensely to my understanding of journalism. I was able to see my work published in Insights, including the feature article for one issue. I wholeheartedly recommend the Communications Unit’s Internship program to anyone looking to gain experience relevant to their chosen major. f

Rebecca Lee

Through my internship I gained a great deal of experience both in journalism and public relations. I helped with proofreading, writing media releases and in refining several public relations briefs. I also learned more about the hard work that goes in to producing a magazine like Insights and about how to put the theory I learnt at university into practice.
— Rebecca Lee completed her internship in October/November 2006 during her final year of studies in Public Relations at the University of Technology Sydney.

Maria Dominguez

I gained a lot of practical experience in print journalism at  Insights as it enabled me to research, write and proofread feature articles, local news and other material for the diverse client publications the  Communications Unit produces. The internship also developed not only my written and verbal communication skills, but my ablilty to manage my time, muli-task and meet deadlines, which are invaluable skills for any job in the print media.
— Maria Dominguez completed her internship in June 2005 during her final year of her Bachelor Media (Writing) at Macquarie University. Maria now works as a proof reader and editor at Harlequin Enterprises in Chatswood.

Kaye Mackey

While at the Communications Unit I contributed to the design content of several issues of Insights, including page layouts, advertisements and front cover design. I was involved in the final stages of the design cycle, and learnt how a magazine is prepared for publishing. Stationery and brochure design were other areas where I was able to apply skills learnt at Uni. I was particularly proud to design the Moderator’s Drought Appeal full page advertisement and letter which was sent to Uniting Church congregations state-wide. This advertisement subsequently won an ARPA award for originality for the Communications Unit.
— Kaye Mackey’s graphic design internship was in June/July 2005 during her final year studying Graphic Design at the Wesley Institute, Sydney. She does freelance design work from home and is involved in Bexley Uniting Church.

Elizabeth Paterson

Working in the Communications Unit gave me a thorough understanding and avenue for practical experience in the journalism industry, from writing copy through to subediting. Highlights included attending movie previews, interviewing authors, being in the midst of at least ten stories with tight deadlines and the mentorship I received from each member of the Communications Unit team.
— Elizabeth Paterson completed her internship in November 2004 during her final year of Journalism & Screen Studies at the University of Wollongong. She works as Events and Communications Officer for Baptist Community Services, NSW & ACT.
