Want journalism or magazine experience?

Insights magazine and the Communications Unit of the Synod of New South Wales and the ACT welcome applications from suitably-qualified interns.

Interns will ideally, but not necessarily, be in their final year of university studies in Journalism, with one day or more per week to volunteer in our busy media unit to help research and write stories for publication and also undertake other duties. Read about the skills some of our interns have gained through spending time with the Communications Unit.

Practical experience gained during your internship should include:

• Reporting, proof-editing and learning about all aspects of producing a monthly magazine which is distributed to 25,000 Uniting Church people in New South Wales and the ACT.
• Writing for the diverse client publications the Unit produces – these include aged care, money and investment, giving and stewardship publications.
• Taking photographs to illustrate your stories.
• Learning about web design, public relations, movie and music reviewing and other communications services the Unit offers.

Please apply in writing enclosing:

• A covering letter which explains your reasons for wanting to be an intern with the Communications Unit. Also tell us when, and for how long, you are available to undertake an internship.
• A copy of your curriculum vitae including two references.
• Sample/s of your journalism.
• Details of the insurance cover provided by your university.
• Details of your university/course supervisor’s expectations regarding internships (if you are completing an internship as part of your degree).

Please note:

• Some understanding of the ethos of the Uniting Church would be helpful but is not mandatory.
• Though this is not a paid position some travel assistance may be offered.
