Meet the ‘Mod Squad’ at Synod 2008

This is not a reference to a ’70s TV series or to a procession of large bikers in leathers.

It is the irreverent description given to a scheme by staff from the Synod Youth Unit and some former moderators to build a network of connection between young Uniting Church leaders and some much older people.

It can be fascinating to trace the spiritual family tree of those who are effective Christian leaders in our church, or any other church, today.

There will be those who influenced, inspired, supported and probably rebuked them. Those who cared enough to give them time. Those who prayed for the least likely younger person and saw in them gifts that they didn’t recognise in themselves.

Those who didn’t give up, even when the relationship was shaky because they experienced life in very different generations.

The Uniting Church is rich in senior people with experience, wisdom, deep love for Christ and concern for their church.

Starting with some who have been in the role of moderator at some period in the past and extending from there, it is hoped to link such “elders” with gifted younger people in their 20s and 30s.

It is hoped that such links will provide younger Uniting Church leaders with a caring mentor and friend, someone who will encourage and offer guidance, who will care and pray for them as they exercise the ministry to which God is calling them.

During Synod 2008, on the evening of Saturday, September 27, there will be a meal together for Synod members under-40 and a number of former moderators.
