Get involved

There are many ways you can offer Rural Support.

Encourage your congregation to get involved in twinning with a rural congregation.

Visit a rural congregation. Set up a visit that involves you helping in whatever way is most needed at the time. It might be help on the land. Or help with running church services. Offering a ministry exchange. Or bringing items the people need but can no longer buy in their towns.

Organise a community event. Events like the Illabo Bush Expo can build community morale, offer education to people regarding sustainable living and farming, provide a venue for local products to be showcased and sold and provide local entertainment and food.

Promote the Flood Appeal in your congregation and/or community. Contact Synod Media Officer Stephen Webb for a media kit.

Uniting Church people interested in assisting in this and other kinds of disaster recovery can help in a variety of ways.

Volunteer time

If you are serious about volunteering time to work in the area of disaster recovery you could consider:

• Becoming a Presbytery Contact
• Joining, through your presbytery, the New South Wales Disaster Welfare Services Coordinating Committee’s regional organisation in your area.

Pray

Pray for people affected by flood or drought, their families and communities and those who serve them.

Pray for Uniting Church people including:

• The Uniting Church’s Rural Chaplains, Julie Greig and Kel Hodge
• Ross Neville, the Uniting Church’ Consultant for Rural Evangelism & Mission
• The Moderator of the Synod of New South Wales and the ACT, the Rev. Niall Reid — who encourages all members of the church to help bring God’s love to suffering communities and to make known the support and care the Uniting Church offers.
